The 2017 Academy Awards were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. As always the Oscars was filled with drama, as you’d expect at an awards ceremony for the best actors in the world, but this years Oscars will live long in the memory for one reason. And it’s not a good one.
The award was for best picture and the two pictures everyone expected to win were La La Land and Moonlight. Warren Beatty announced the winner, with La La Land picking up their seventh Oscar of the night. Or so they thought. There was a huge gaffe behind the scenes, with Warren Beatty actually being handed the envelope for the previous award. Without knowledge of this he announced La La Land as the winners of the award even though Moonlight had actually won it. The gaffe was spotted by the people behind the scenes but not before the cast of La La Land had delivered their acceptance speech. When it was finally realized by the cast, they themselves had to announce it to the winners.” this is not a joke, Moonlight has actually won best picture”.
Elsewhere the big 4 awards were handed out, these being Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and of course Best Picture.
Emma Stone won best actor for her performance in La La Land, much to the disagreement of some users on Twitter.
The award for Best Actor went to Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester By the Sea. He touched on how the award made him feel in his acceptance speech,” Man, I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say, but I’m really proud to be a part of this community and I look out at all of you”.
Up next was best director and La La Land picked up it’s sixth award of the night (could have been seven), with Damien Chazelle winning the award. Chazelle addressed his girlfriend in the award who was in attendance at the Oscars, “this was a movie about love and I was lucky enough to fall in love while making it, and it means the world to me that you’re here sharing this with me.”
The best of the rest saw Jessica Biel as the best dressed according to numerous articles, (honourable mention to Ruth Negga).
The worst dressed was someone you’d expect to be the most desirable. Fifty Shades of Grey actor Dakota Johnson.
Overall the 2017 Oscars was won of drama, controversy and opinions. It had a viewership of 32.9 million viewers, the second lowest of all time and held host to the biggest gaffe in Oscars history. The 2017 Oscars will be one to remember, but that statement is said every year until the next one comes. In summation. Moonlight went La La with their win. Reaction to Emma’s best actress win was one of Stone. Casey shows hope that an Affleck film can be enjoyable. And Chazell shows his lovey-dovey side in acceptance speech. Until next year.
